Many people are surprised to learn that the apricot tree is hardy and grows very well in Quebec. What makes this tree fragile is that it blooms very early, which makes it more at risk from late spring frosts. We have included apricot trees in our “Tropical” arrangement not because of its hardiness, but for the taste qualities of its fruits.
The ligonberry is a ground-covering plant, which likes very acidic soils, so it coexists very well with blueberries and cranberries. This northern fruit is really unusual: the plant produces huge quantities of small, tart, red berries that are harvested in autumn. They are usually eaten as jams or sorbets.
